The mixing of Islamic culture and local art has roots that go back to the time this religion came to the Indonesian Archipelago. Several art forms-literature, drama, an even crafted objects like the keris, the rencong, or batik-cloth-blended with the spirit of Islam. In fact, a number of art forms-like Javanese wayang drama-became significant vehicles for spreading the Islamic faith and its teachings.
